Dr. Neal Sheffield

On June 4, The Presbyterian Homes Foundation, Inc. (dba Brightspire Foundation), along with River Landing at Sandy Ridge, celebrated the dedication of three spaces within River Landing's new Wellness Center. The generosity and philanthropy of several individuals made these special dedications possible.

The festivities began with the dedication of the classroom that enables residents of River Landing at Sandy Ridge to pursue life-long learning. Dr. Neal Sheffield and his family dedicated the space in memory of Janet Brooks Sheffield, Dr. Sheffield's wife of 61 years and a former elementary school teacher. The space, which can accommodate groups of various sizes, will honor Janet's memory as a place of knowledge and personal growth. In his comments, Dr. Sheffield shared, "This room has great potential not yet imagined. Thank you for letting us provide this room in Janet's name."

A second dedication honored Dick and Gretchen Winter for their gift that made possible the state-of-the-art strength and resistance equipment housed in the Wellness Center, known as the Workout Zone. The opportunity to address this important need for the recreational welfare of residents and staff, as well as a desire to support the physical therapy team, was paramount in their minds as they considered making this first ever donation of such a magnitude. A thought by another resident donor resonated with them when they considered the opportunity, "because this is our home."

The finale ended with a special dedication of the indoor Walking Track honoring former River Landing at Sandy Ridge Life Enrichment Coordinator, Joy A. Odom. This special dedication was made possible by Janet L. Koontz, who continues to show her appreciation for the "many, many miles" Joy walked on behalf of the residents and the community in her years of service. The dedication plaque came with a reminder for folks to, "Keep on Trekkin." I had a dream for the Wellness Center and here it is—it's beautiful and I love it," shared Jan Koontz. In between tears, Joy Odom stated, "This is such a thoughtful and generous gift."

This spirit of philanthropy has made an incredible difference for the River Landing at Sandy Ridge campus and the residents and staff who have the opportunity to use the amenities provided. The Presbyterian Homes Foundation, Inc. (dba Brightspire Foundation) gratefully acknowledges each donor and those honored by their giving.
